How to Prepare for Movers

How to Prepare for MoversIt’s no secret that moving can be overwhelming. If you’ve decided you don’t want to take on all of the heavy lifting yourself, you may have hired a mover—smart choice! The right moving company can help significantly to lighten the burden of moving so that you can tackle other things on your to-do list. However, there are still some things that you can do in order to prepare for your movers and ensure a smooth and stress-free moving day:

  • Clean – A few weeks before your moving date, you should commit yourself to tackling one cleaning project per day, whether it’s purging your closet or cleaning out your dresser drawers. This will help lighten the load on your movers come moving day.
  • Pack and label your belongings – Unless your moving company is doing the packing for you, you should make sure that all of your belongings are properly packed in boxes that are labeled with the room they belong to. This will allow your movers to do their job quickly and efficiently.
  • Figure out parking – If you don’t have your own private driveway, you will want to secure a parking pass or work out whatever logistics are necessary in order to ensure your movers have ample space for the truck(s).
  • Take care of pets and children – You’ll want to secure your pets in crates or get a babysitter for small children, as it would be difficult for both you and your movers to work around them come moving day.
  • Get cash ready – You don’t have to tip your movers, but if you’re satisfied with their work, it is appropriate to tip them either 5% of the total bill (divided among the movers) or a reasonable flat fee. In both cases, you’ll want to have cash on hand.
